What to Do Before Bringing Your Computer in for Repair

Save time, protect your data, and get faster results with these simple steps.

When your computer starts acting up – whether it’s crashing, freezing, or just refusing to start – bringing it in for repair is the right move. But before you unplug everything and rush it to QWERTY Computers, there are a few important steps you can take to protect your data, avoid delays, and ensure we can help you more efficiently.

Here’s a quick checklist of what to do before handing over your machine:

Back Up Your Data (If Possible)

If your computer is still somewhat functional, make a backup of your important files — documents, photos, emails, and anything else you don’t want to lose. You can use:

  • An external hard drive or USB flash drive
  • A cloud service like Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox

If your computer is completely unresponsive, don’t worry — QWERTY Computers can attempt to recover your data as part of the repair process.

Note Down All Passwords

To properly diagnose or repair your device, we may need to log into:

  • Your Windows user account
  • Your Microsoft account (which may use your Gmail address!)
  • Your email client (e.g. Outlook, Thunderbird)
  • Any encryption or BitLocker keys

Having these on hand makes the process smoother and prevents delays. If you’re unsure which passwords we might need, feel free to ask when booking your service.

Record the Problem and Recent Changes

The more context we have, the faster we can help. Take note of:

  • What the issue is and when it started
  • Any error messages you’ve seen
  • Whether it happens every time or only occasionally
  • If you recently installed any new software or updates

Even a short description like “It freezes after login” or “I get a blue screen after updates” can be very helpful.

Unplug Unnecessary Accessories

Unless they’re part of the problem, there’s no need to bring in:

  • Keyboards, mice, printers, or speakers
  • Power cables (unless it’s a laptop or has a special adapter)
  • USB devices or dongles

Just bring the computer itself (and its charger if it’s a laptop), unless we ask you to include something specific.

Disable Passwords or Create a Temporary User Account (Optional)

If you’re concerned about privacy but still want us to access your system, you can either:

  • Temporarily disable your login password (if safe to do so), or
  • Create a temporary user account with admin access for repair purposes

We’ll never access personal files unnecessarily, but this can provide peace of mind and speed up the process.

Bonus Tip: Clean It (A Little)

You don’t have to make it spotless, but removing dust from vents or giving it a quick wipe can help us handle and diagnose your machine more easily.

Preparing your device before bringing it to QWERTY Computers helps us:
